Happy International Dog Day!
International Dog Day was created by animal advocate, Colleen Paige, in 2004 to encourage people to adopt dogs from rescue shelters. The holiday celebrates all breeds and raises awareness for dogs who need loving homes!
How to show your support:
Volunteer at a local shelter
Find a shelter near you and apply to be a volunteer! Local shelters are always in need of volunteers. Most applications are on their website and are easy to fill out. You will also get to meet all of your local dogs who need homes and get to know them while helping out your shelter! Here are some shelters in Columbia, SC:
- Pawmetto Lifeline
- Final Victory Animal Rescue
Donate to charities/organizations for dogs
You could also pick one of your favorite dog charities or organizations to donate to! Monetary donations are always helpful in keeping those charities and organizations going. Here are some great organizations you can donate to:
- Hope for Paws
- Best Friends Animal Society
- House with a Heart
In addition to monetary donations, local shelters also accept dog food, treats, bedding, kennels, and lots of other pet supplies.
Adopt a dog
Adopting a dog is another great way to show your appreciation for dogs on International Dog Day as long as you have the resources, a loving environment, and the time for a new dog. There are so many dogs who need a place to call home! Head out to your local shelter to find your new best friend.
